The software is free forever and always will be. Hardware made for it — starting with the dew heater ring — is sold at a small margin to cover fab runs and shipping. Buying it is never required: everything on the parts list is off-the-shelf, and the heater works with a hand-wound resistor ring too.
Skylapse 12V dew heater ring

A purpose-made 12V heater ring for the dome, switched by Skylapse itself from a BME280 dewpoint reading (or by hand from the Heater tab). It is real, in hand, and running in the reference rig: 50 mm hole / 85 mm outer, ~31 Ω, 4.2 W at 12 V, two solder pads and nothing else on the board. **$20**. The parts list has the specs and the verification run, and the Build page has the wiring, screw by screw.
